Welcome to Sinkunia, Sierra Leone
Sinkunia is in the Northeast corner of Sierra Leone map. The country is recovering from a devastating ten year civil war in which much of the infrastructure was destroyed. Greg Smith served in the Peace Corp in 1974-1975 and recently returned, with his wife, Clare Staton and their daughter, Lily, to the village where he spent much of his time. What they experienced left them with a resolve to help in whatever way they could to rebuild the school in this town.
Sierra Leone is a desperately poor country. In 2004, it was rated as the poorest country in the world based upon what is called purchasing power parity (article - world's poorest countries). Conditions have improved slightly since then.
But with life expectancy at birth of 37 and 40 years (male/female) and a healthy life expectancy of 27 and 30 years, it has a long way to go. (WHO Health Statistics )
